A unique Easter tradition that has endured over time in this municipality

of Montseny.

Origin and meaning

The tradition dates back to the 19th century and is linked to Holy Week. On Saturday

On Holy evening/night, groups would gather to play cards, especially the game of

canary, ( There is a card game called canary, which is based on luck and, to a large extent, on your ability to deceive the rest (make a catch) , betting eggs as a prize. These eggs came from the candy houses, where the

singers received eggs from farmers' houses; one part was offered to the rector and the other

it was used for the game.

The game and the response

More recently, eggs were purchased from local establishments and gambled on

games that often lasted until dawn. At midnight, the participants

They prepared omelettes with the same eggs that were being played, turning the game into

a gastronomic and social celebration.

Evolution of space

Initially, the games were played in peasant houses, but over time they spread to

move to establishments such as the Bar de l'Establiment, Can Jaumet, the Hotel and

currently at Bar Avalón and Can Florenci.

Living tradition

Despite social changes, Egg Night continues to be celebrated in Gualba, maintaining

live a tradition that combines religion, play and community.
